For Helen, stanza 3
May. 2nd, 2008 04:34 pmWe each found love, we added, multiplied
and grew. We each have marks and scars to show,
to prove, how hard we found it to divide,
to do the deed, to stop, to turn and go.
Though yours are fading, mine are on my sleeve
where I parade my bleeding heart with pride -
what twisted self-importance to believe
that others ought to care! Why don't I hide
the wounds? Your dignity's beyond my reach
as is your quiet coping strength, the way
you unify your family, so each
supports the others. When I come to stay
I feel the love you have and freely share
with me, for there is love enough to spare.
